Interesting topic just recently trending about DC Comics superhero The Green Lantern being relaunched as the first openly gay superhero in the DC Comics .
However this is not the space hero well known to people today, but rather his parallel Earth counterpart Alan Scott. With years of inferred LGBTQ characters in the comics Scott will be taking role as the highest profiled openly gay superhero.
Despite all of this creator James Robinson states that Scott’s homosexuality will only be part of his character, and there will be no further exploration. I find this article particularly interesting because it is a reflection of a society that is gaining more awareness of LGTBQ issues. The important thing is not that Alan Scott is a homosexual, but that his homosexuality does not affect who is as a person and a hero. As a new generation arises perhaps seeing this new development in a superhero may make a difference in the lives of questioning youth or heterosexual adults. The gay rights movement continues…it just takes one step at a time.
