Following up on the news of DC’s newest gay character, the Green Lantern Allan Scott, we have another landmark for LGBTQ advancement in comics. In a few weeks Marvel will have their first gay marriage!
The lucky couple is the superhero Northstar and his longtime boyfriend, Kyle. They will tie the knot on Astonishing X-Men #51, in stores on June 20th.
We’ve had much to celebrate recently in terms of LGBTQ progression in comics, but this was (and for some people it still is) a very controversial theme for a long time. 
Here is a list of how some LGBTQ characters were treated in comics:
In 2005 the character of Northstar was killed in three alternative realities, in one of them by Marvel’s favorite hero, Wolverine.
In 2006 Freedom Ring, another gay superhero, was said to be a symbol of Marvel’s open policy towards gay characters. Three weeks after these statements Freedom Ring was impaled by spikes, including one that pierced his groin and protruded from his anus.
Hooded Justice and Silhouette, from Watchmen. A gay man murdered by his teammate and a woman killed along with her girlfriend shortly after coming out.
In a 1980’s issue of The Incredible Hulk, Bruce Banner is nearly raped by a group of gay men in a shower of a YMCA. He turns into the Hulk afterwards…

So let’s celebrate how much comics have evolved their depiction of LGBTQ members! From trivial deaths and prejudiced portrayals to leading gay heroes that just want to be like the next person and continuously save the world from the bad guys :P
